State of the City 2016 – Home Run Announced

Mayor Christopher Cabaldon delivered his annual State of the City address before a record crowd of more than 300 community and business leaders in the City Hall Galleria Thursday night.

The Mayor used the opportunity to launch the West Sacramento Home Run initiative, which he said will “support our youth from cradle to college and career.” The concept would provide Universal preschool, paid internships for high school students, digital learning strategies, and a proposal for fee-free community college tuition as well as college scholarships to eligible students.

The Mayor also outlined a plan to reduce the homeless population and its impact on public safety.  He proposed a 1/4 cent sales tax to help fund these ideas, and also to keep roads in good repair. He spoke of progress in creating a world class trail system and extensive flood protection through the Southport levee project.

The Mayor also announced that the historic Washington Firehouse on 3rd Street will become the newest Burgers and Brew restaurant, complete with a bar and jazz club called Station #1 upstairs.

Prior to the Mayor’s speech, City Council members presented Civic Leadership Awards to organizations making a difference in West Sacramento.
